Answer these two questions.

1) Did Urban life cause a decline in American religion or just adjustment to new forms?

2) Why did Urban life alter the condition of women and bring changes like birth control and rising divorce rates to the family?

1.Urban Life mostly helped cause an adjustment to new religion. During this time, churches were becoming too lavish and people did not like this at all. With new immigration, came new religious groups and new church members. For example, Roman Catholics and Jews were gaining a large amount of strength. By 1890, Americans could choose from 150 religious groups including two new ones, the Salvation Army and the Church of Christ. In addition, people in urban areas participated in the YMCA. In other words, religion did not decline, but since there were more religious groups to pick from, peole spread out amongst these groups and adjusted to the new religions.

2.Urban life was filled with sexual freedom which led to a high divorce rate and birth control use. Divorce was also common because families were alone, away from their parents and the life they were used to living. Also, more children meant more mouths to feed and so many families turned to birth control to decrease the number of children they had. What could also add to he high divorce rate and use of birth control in the number of opportunites women had and how women began to be outspoken and fight for their rights. Since this was true, men might have gotten intimidated, and with more opportunites, women had less time for family and children.

1. Urban life did not cause a decline in American religion persay. It caused religion and church to evlove. From Protestantism sprange liberal protestants, who preached the "social gospel." after the New Immigration there were even more religions available in the united states, including the salvation army and the church of christ, scientist. urban life also lead to the development of the YMCA and YWCA, a presences in every major american city by the 1900s.

2. Urban life altered family life because the family as a singular unit became the only source of intimate companionship, which was different from a life among 'clan, kin and village.' This led to more stress in a family which caused the divorce rates to climb.
Family size began to shrink because no longer were many children needed for help on the farm or whatnot. More children meant more mouths to feed, and also there was simply not enough room in the small apartments in cities to hold a large family. toward the end of the century couples were finding out ways of birth control.
the growth of women's independence in unrban life was unfluenced by the leading women's activists of the time, such as charlotte perkins gilman and carrie chapman catt.

1.) Urbanization following the Civil War created upsurges in population and the growth of cities, which in turn brought adjustment to new forms of religion. As Protestant churches, whose "traditional doctrines and pastoral approaches" were hardest hit by urbanization by becoming outdated, Baptist and Episcopal churches suffered social and economical blows. Churches "achievement was now meaured by money," in this new age of desire for wealth and prosperity. Liberal Protestantism evolved admist the adjustment of new forms of religion and appealed to many, as its' beliefs of "earthly salvation and personal growth" were preached widely. Urbanization also brought immigration, which gave substance to Roman Catholic and Jewish faiths, allowing Americans to worship as they please. It also created the Salvation Army and the Church of Christ, which was an influential church that provided the new practice of healing through prayer to many devoted followers. Furthermore, YMCAs and YWCAs, which are still around today, were established in many areas to provide havens of religious practice and physical education for cities' populations.

2.) Urban life created stress at home within families and communities, both emotionally and physically. Because of the amount of people, size of cities, and amount of available jobs, birthrates were on the decline, and as birth control developed, "marriages were being delayed" in people's desire for "social mobility." Aside from this was the sparked emergence of indepedence among women socially and economically. Women began to press upon certain rights, such as the right to vote, in their battle for equality. Suffragists such as Carrie Chapman Catt, were successful in demanding equality between men and women, which spawned various women's organizations. In turn, Ida B. Wells contributed to the black women's suffrage movement, and created clubs and organizations for black women.

1.  During the urbanization of America, many people started to become misinformed when it came to church and religion.  These people saw the wealthy, like John Rockefeller, as symbols of their denominations.  Many people started associating wealth with God, and they were turning to God for the wrong reasons.  Religion therefore had to adjust itself in order to bring the working class back onto the right path.  Religions that had til now been shunned were now gaining popularity, like Catholicism.  New religions, like the First Church of Christ, Scientist, founded by Mary Baker Eddy, took different approaches when it came to religion.  Mrs. Eddy believed that true Christianity could heal people through prayer, both mentally and physically.  Other groups such as the Salvation Army, the YMCA, and the YWCA worked to keep people on the straight and narrow.

2.  The move towards the city proved more stressful than helpful for families.  Although there were more jobs available, the hours and conditions that the men, women, and even children dealt with were too much.  The family would spend the day apart, come home, and collapse for the short time they were together.  Women were especially hard hit because they were also expected to raise a family.  They needed to find ways to cope.  They had different solutions to this problem.  Many women waited to get married, hoping to remain independant long enough to make some money for themselves.  Once they got married, they started using birth control in order to prevent any "accidents" which would result in more mouths to feed.  But sometimes the burden of a family proved too much, so many women ended up divorcing their husbands, searching for their independence from men.  They spend the precious little free time they had advocating for women's rights, especially their right to vote.  The changes that occured during this period were women's answers to coping with their stressful lives.

1st i just wanna say i all most had a heart attack when i saw the title say questions 1-24....lol

1) Urban life did not cause a decline in religion so to say it was more of a new evolving religion. For example Protestants sort of "branched off" liberal Protestants, which connected religious ideas to new cultures and wanted "modest moreal reforms". Also they questioned old beliefs of "what really is sin?" Attrating many people by preaching on "earthly salvation and personal growth". Also for other churches grew through immigration such as Roman Catholics and Jewish especially the Roman Catholics who grew to 9million. There were also more denominations now too

2)In the Urban life women were pressured to become more independent and on their own. Also in the families women had less time to tend to their families. Also with this new freedom came sexual freedom, which affected the divorce rates...another factor on divorce rates was the outspokeness (<---don't know if that is a word =)) In this new age of urban sprawl sex was no longer to be something ashamed of or hidden but nwo open and more secular

1)  Urban life did not cause a decline in religion.  Urbanization actually helped the adjustment of religion.  The religions already established were expanded and the more urban of the denominations had beliefs that were somewhat different from those of rural areas, such as liberal protestants.  By 1890 there were about 150 religions that Americans could believe in.  The Salvation Army, Church of Christ, Scientist, and the YMCA and YWCA were either established or became better known and popular during this time.  Immigrants to America helped The Jewish and Roman Catholic faiths to grow as well.

2)  Family life became more stressful because it became more personal.  Marriages were now based more on "intimate companionship" and "emotional and psychological satisfaction" which contributed to the stress of family.  This caused the start of the "divorce revolution".  Marriages were delayed and women had more opportunities in the work place.  People were living in smaller dwellings and there wasn't as much food because they were not living on farms anymore so it was better to have fewer kids. This was part of the reason why there was a need for birth control.  Also, people wanted more sexual freedom in their lives, partially because of their economic freedom.  They started to be more comfortable about the topic.  During this time the women sufferage was coming back.  Women again started to fight for their right to vote.
