I. Intro & Congress Drafts George Washington
-2nd continental conress met in philly 1775 and all colonies were represented. no well-defined sentiment for independence but a desire to continue fighting in the hope that the kind and parliment  would consent to a redress of grievances
-George Wshington put in charge of army

II. Bunker Hill and Hessian hirelings
- Americans were voicing their desire to patch things u pwith britain but also shootiong down his majesty's soldiers
-Colonial armies seized bunker hill causing George III to slam the door on all hope of reconcilliation & declared the colonies guilty of treason
-Hessians were hired soldiers from germany

III. The Abortive Conquest of Canada
- Oct 1775, Br burned Falmouth ME
- Colonists decided that invading Canada would add a 14th colony and deprive Br of a vaulable base for striking at rebel colonies
-Campaign collapsed and colonial men retreated
-January 1776 british forced to evacuate boston
-In south colonists won a battle against 1500 loyalists and also defeated an invading Br flett @ charleston harbor

IV. Thomas Paine Preaches Common Sense
-Thomas Paine published 'Common Sense' in 1776 which urgerd colonists to stop the war of inconsistency, stop pretending to be loay and just fight.
-Paine argued that nowhere in the universe does a smaller body control a larger one, so it didnt make sense that tiny Britain should control the vast American colonies

V. Paine and the idea of 'Republicanism
- Paine argued his idea that there should be a republic where senators, governors and judges should have their power form the consent of the people
- idea about rejecting a monarchyand embracing an independent republic was well recieved by most colonists
- Some patriots wanted a republic ruled by a natural aristocracy

VI. Jefferson's 'Explanation' of Independence
- Philadelphia congress gradually moved toward a cleaner break w/ britain
-Declaration of Independence- conconted by Thomas Jefferson, upheld natural rights on humankind

VII. Patriots and Loyalists
- Not all conolists were united. Patriots who supported the rebellion were called Whigs, Loyalists who suppurted the kind were called Tories. Those who didn't care were often asked to join one side or the other
- British could only control Tory areas
-Loyalists were numeros were the Anglican Church was strongest

VIII. The Loyalist Exodus
- Patriots confiscated loyalist property to resell it and raise money

IX. General Washington at Bay
- after evacuating boston, british focused on New York as a headquartersfor operations.
-Washinton couldn't get enough men to fight the impressive army that arrived in NY in july 1776.
-retreated across delaware river in december, surprising and capturing a thousand hessians
- then moved on to princeton where he defeated a small british detachment

 X. Burgoyne's Bulndering Invasion
- Br attempted a scheme to gain control of hudson river valley in 1777 lead by general burgoyne and failed and retreated at saratoga

XI. Revolution in Diplomacy?
-France, eager for revenge on br, supplied americans
-- After saratoga, france finally entered the war against britain
- France in 1778 offered a treaty of alliance to america, which included recognition of independence. america accepted it with caution.

XII. The Colonial War becomes a World War
- 1779, Spain and Holland entered war against Britain
-1780 Russia lined up Europes neutral'sin passive hostility against Britain
-America didnt win war until Fr, Sp, and Holland joined them, overwhelming britain.

XIII. Blow and Counterblow
-Benedict Arnold turned traitor by plotting with Br to sell out West Point. He was discovered and fled
- British devised a plan to take colonies from the south. Got GA in 1778, charleston SC in 1780. In the carolinas partiots fought loyalists.

XIV. The Land Frontier and Sea Frontier.
-1777, inidans went on scalping spree
- most indians supported Britain b/c if they won they would stop american expansion to the west

XV. Yorktown and the Final Cutain
-inflation soared and govt was virtually bankrupt
-Cornwallais trapped by washington's army, Rochambeau's army (fr), and the french navy
- after that fighting continued in south but america has won.

XVI. Peace at Paris
- Ben Franklin, John Ams and John Jay met in paris for peace deal.
-Treated of Paris 1783- BR formally recognized USA, and granted numerous boundaries. Americans could not persecute loyalists

XVII. A New Nation Legitimized
-Br. ceded so much land to get American away from Franch alliances and b/c american friendly whigs were in control of parliment at that time.
-France approved treaty.
