Chapter 20 "Girding for War: The North and South"

Presidential of the Disunited States of America
-1861=President Lincoln inaugurated
-North and South bring about questions to debt, federal territories
-With North and South going against one another pleased other European countries=the split of Monroe Doctrine

South Carolina Assails Fort Sumter
-Lincoln tells S.C. that he's sending provisions but to the S.C. those were reinforcements
-the South fired cannons on April 12, 1861
-after 34 hours they surrendered
-Lincoln puts forth a blockade=weak at first/strong layter on
-Border States (BS)=Virigina, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina
-Confederate capital=Richmond

Brother's Blood and Border Blood
-border states key to winning the war
-Lincoln uses moral persuasion to keep the BS
-Lincoln says the war is on SAVING THE UNION, because if he said it was to stop slavery he would loose the BS to the South
-Five Civilized Tribes=Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole=side with South
-Parts of Cherokee and Plain Native Americans fight with North
-brother v. brother

The Balance of Forces
-South advantages
       -only had to fight to a draw to win
       -keep North from invading
       -better generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
       -since children they learned to fight
-Down fall of the South=shortages
-North advantages
        -better economy
        -more men
        -sea power
-Down fall of the North=bad generals
-North strength beat Southern advantages

Dethroning King Cotton
-South depends on foreign aid=not at all
-Europe favors anit-slavery they do not get invovled
        -don't need cotton from South b/c surplus
-King Corn and King Wheat beat King Cotton

The Decisiveness of Diplomacy
-South almost recieved help from foreign countries but it failed to succeed
-1861 British mail steamer Trent removed two Confederate
-British get mad=Lincoln release them
-1862 British Alabama and Confederates
-Charles Francis Adams=telling Britain not to make any ships for the Confederacy

Foreign Flare-Ups
-Britain=two Laird rams=two Confederate war ships that can crush the wooden ships of the Union=Union telling British "NO"=British OK
-Napoleon II puts Austrian Archduke Maximilian in Mexico=U.S. sayin "Don't U Dare...Get out...Montroe Doctrine"

President Davis versus President Lincoln
-Jefferson Davis works hard while Lincoln chills

Limitations on Wartime Liberties
-Lincoln does tyrannical acts but only in order to preserve the Union
     -illegally calling for a blackade
     -acts with out Congressional consent
     -sending in troops to border states
     -advancement of $2million to 3 private citizens
     -suspension of habeas corpus
     -intimidations of voters in teh Border States

Volunteers and Draftees:North and South
-at first man power was strong but then weak=draft=angry poor b/c rich can pay $300 for substitute
-volunteers  made 90% of Union army

The Economic Stresses of War
-Morril Tariff Act
-Washington treasury goes up
-National Banking System
       -National Banking Act when BUS was killed my Andrew Jackson
-Inflation goes up in South 9000% at to the Norths 80%

The North's Economic Boom
-The North does better in coming out of the war than going in
-millionaire class born
-shoddy suppliers
-size in clothing invented
-petroleum oil discovered in Pennsylvania
-women gained the positions of men while they were at war
-Clara Burton and Dorothea Dix=transforming nursing into a respectful profession
-Sally Tompkins=Richomond infirmary for wounded Confederate soldiers and awarded the rank of Captain by Jefferson Davis

A Crushed Cotton Kingdom
-the South was ruined by the war
-transportation collapsed
-supplies became scare
-South claimed 12% of the nations wealth=30% before the war
THE SOUTH LOST
